Millions of website owners are shocked as the impacts of the recent 2021 November Core Google Algorithm Update are felt. Website rankings are dropping like flies all over. This is the third core update Google has released in 2021. The Google support community has a lot to say about it.

The November 2021 core algorithm update was preceded by a spam update, which presumably cleared the world wide web of negative influences to the search index, to make the search index more pure and less spam. Read more on this at search engine land here.

How do fix a drop in rankings?

You need a website SEO Audit to determine what is potentially causing a problem.

Firstly check if your website has spammy backlinks coming into it by running a backlink audit report which you can do from Semrush.

The backlink report will show you which links have been discovered and score them. Any with a spam score over 45 is deemed to be a spammy backlink. If your website does have any, you need to download the report, run a filter on it and create a disavow file with the plan to submit this to Google to ignore discovered spammy / toxic links. You need to learn how to use and when to use a disavow file.

Tips on how to avoid dropping off in the rankings after a Google Algorithm Update.

  • Never write spammy content.
  • Never copy content from other websites, duplicate content and word for word copied lengthily sentence, paragraphs or whole pages copied off other websites is a no-no!
  • Always follow Google Webmaster quality guidelines.
  • Do not link to spammy websites or websites with a high toxicity score
  • Dont pay someone in some land far away to build you several thousand links per month, they will probably be black hat spammy links
